By the end of 2023, around 385,000 refugees will have found refuge in Bavaria. More than half of them fled war and terror from Afghanistan, Syria and Iraq, and almost 180,000 fled Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. These terrible experiences leave their mark on body and soul. We also know from our work that many people have had to go through traumatic experiences again on the dangerous escape routes. Children and women are particularly at risk.
There are also many people in Germany who have been severely traumatized by domestic or sexualized violence. In addition, studies show that children and young people were particularly affected by the restrictions during the coronavirus pandemic. The consequences include an increase in mental illnesses such as anxiety disorders and depression.
All of these groups need appropriate psychological and trauma-therapeutic care as well as professionals and volunteers trained in dealing with them sensitively.
